Monday in Chapel Hill, the Board of Governors Strategic Directions Committee continues its work on a five-year plan that will govern the university system from 2013-2018. Last week the UNC Board of Governors examined a first draft of the plan, Out Time, Our Future .
On Tuesday Vice President Joe Biden will deliver a comprehensive package of recommendations to curb gun violence to President Barack Obama.
Biden’s proposal is expected to include universal background checks as well as bans on assault weapons. The recommendations come in response to the December shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
The National Rifle Association is already suggesting Congress will not pass a weapons ban .
The NC NAACP and Historic Thousands on Jones Street (HKonJ) Coalition will hold a news conference Tuesday at the NC General Assemby and re-emphasize their call to North Carolina’s new leadership to “stay moderate in the face of extremism” – a petition that was first released Friday, January 4, 2013.
Attendees will personally deliver copies of the petition and DVDs of the documentary based on the NC NAACP’s Truth and Hope Tour of Poverty to legislative offices.
Wednesday morning in Durham, state Senator Ellie Kinnaird will receive the Bertha “B” Holt Award for legislative leadership and courage.
The 2013 Champions of Choice Breakfast is sponsored by Planned Parenthood Action Fund of Central NC, and coincides with the 40th anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision.
Sen Kinnaird stood up repeatedly for women and women’s health in the 2012 past legislative session – the worst on record for NC women. The keynote address will be delivered by Representative Deborah Ross.
Also Wednesday, the legislative Lottery Oversight Committee meets in Raleigh. With money tight this session, some lawmakers may be tempted to look toward whether revenue from the lottery can be shifted to fill some gaps. But last fall, committee members issued a report recommending lottery net proceeds only be used for education purposes.
The series, sponsored by the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication , kicks off with Perdue’s talk at 4 p.m. in the Nelson Mandela Auditorium of the FedEx Global Education Center on the UNC campus.
After her opening remarks, Perdue will discuss leadership on stage with UNC journalism Dean Susan King, College of Arts and Sciences Dean Karen Gil and two top journalism students.
And on Friday, the Chancellor Search Committee at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill meets again as they continue to work to find the school’s 11th chancellor.
Chancellor Holden Thorp notified UNC System President Tom Ross last September that he planned to step down effective June 30, 2013. Thorp’s resignation came on the heels of an NCAA investigation of the Tar Heel football program and questions of academic irregularities in one department.
