NC NAACP President: State legislators should support “sensible” gun control (audio)

As President Obama calls on Congress to advance a broad package of proposals to curb gun violence, the president of the NC NAACP is voicing support for stricter gun control.

Rev. William Barber says while the NAACP does not oppose gun ownership, he believes that it’s time for lawmakers to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Barber also dismisses a suggestion by the National Rifle Association that the best way to stop school shootings is to arm teachers and school administrators:

“We’ve lost too many people to gun violence to ever think that the answer is more guns,” said the NC NAACP president on Wednesday.”This state legislature needs to support a ban on assault weapons and these clips with 30 or more bullets.”

A new Associated Press-GfK poll finds that six in 10 Americans support stricter gun laws following the December shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., which claimed the lives of 20 children and six adults.
