‘One of the worst decisions by the Supreme Court…’ (Audio)

This week marks the third anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on Citizens United making unlimited political spending a form of protected speech.

U.S. Rep. Walter Jones flatly calls that 2010 opinion:

“….one of the worst decisions by the Supreme Court in my adult lifetime.”

Jones says Citizens United opened the floodgates of special interests money in the 2012 campaigns, creating the perception that all elected officials are bankrolled by and beholden to the Political Action Committees.

A recent report by Demos and U.S. PIRG found that the big money system distorted democracy in the 2012 election, creating clear winners and losers. In the last election cycle, 83.9% of House candidates and 66.7% of Senate candidates who outspent their general election opponents won their elections.

Rep. Jones joins us this week on News & Views to discuss his efforts in the 113th Congress to change the current system and expand public financing. Jones also weighs in on the debt ceiling and how Congress will approach gun control and immigration this year.
