McCrory to 500,000 uninsured North Carolinians: Drop dead

Pat McCrory 4 [1]There is now, officially, no hope for Pat McCrory. The new North Carolina governor is now a “made man” in the world of right-wing ideologues.

Today, just days after asking the General Assembly to slow its mad rush to opt out of the Affordable Care Act, the Governor reversed course and fully embraced [2] the most extreme, cutting-off-our-noses-to-spite-our-faces position of the market fundamentalists and anti-government extremists by announcing that he would oppose expansion of North Carolina’s Medicaid program to cover 500,000 low-income uninsured people  as well as the creation of  health care exchange as made possible by the Affordable Care Act.

There are so many things dishonest and wrong and just plain mean about this absurd decision that it’s impossible to list them all here. For a sampling check out this post [3] and this one [4].

The bottom political line at this point, however, appears to be this: Pat McCrory has officially consummated his marriage with the far right. After years of dating and flirting and eye-batting, the once-moderate Charlotte mayor is now officially a card-carrying member of the Pope-Koch-Locke-Heritage-Americans for the Prosperous conspiracy to repeal the 20th Century. Mississippi, Alabama are now – God help us – officially our state role models.

The only good thing about any of this is that at least North Carolinians now know where they stand.
