‘Power grab” bill passes House, heads back to Senate (video)

The NC House gave final approval Monday evening to Senate Bill 10 [1], the Government Reorganization & Efficiency Act.

The legislation will allow Governor McCrory to essentially fire the current members of more than two dozen oversight boards and commissions, replacing them with political appointees.

During the floor debate, the Republican-controlled House rejected an amendment by Rep. Paul Luebke that would have added a consumer advocate as a voting member to the state Utilities Commission.

Rep. Mike Hager said that was the public staff’s role – to look out for consumers – as he urged his colleagues to reject Leubke’s proposal.

“Incredibly, we just had a vote on the floor of the House to say that we don’t need to have a voting member of the Utilities commission, who cares about consumers,” argued Rep. Deborah Ross in urging members to vote down SB 10. “This is not a reform bill.”

Rep. Edgar Starnes said the reorganization bill would bring the boards back to the center and “accomplish the reforms we desire.”

The bill now heads back to the Senate for concurrence.
