Conservative lawmakers seek to derail Perdue’s Dix Park deal

State Senators Ralph Hise, Louis Pate, Tommy Tucker, and Warren Daniel filed legislation Thursday to condemn the Dorothea Dix park deal inked just three-months ago by then-Governor Bev Perdue and the City of Raleigh.
Under the terms of the lease Raleigh would pay $500,000-per-year and develop the 325-acre property as a “destination park.”
But Senate Bill 334 would scrap the deal. Republicans contend that Perdue signed-off on a land deal well below market value.
Senate President Pro-Tem Phil Berger pledged at the time to terminate the “ill-conceived” lease and reclaim the land. Today Berger tweeted the revamped plan “ensures that the Dorthea Dix property will continue the legacy of service to North Carolina’s most vulnerable citizen.”
SB 334 would have the state Department of Administration evaluate the land and then re-lease a portion of the Dorothea Dix campus to Raleigh at fair market value. Any proceeds from sale or lease would be used solely for mental health treatment.
When Pat McCrory was asked by reporters last December about how he felt about Perdue’s transaction with the City of Raleigh, his answer was firm: “She’s the governor. That’s how I feel about it. She has the authority to make those moves .”
