Fracking foes rally this evening at the General Assembly

This evening at 6:00 p.m., environmentalists and concerned citizens will rally outside the legislature to urge lawmakers to keep their promise not to fast-track approval for hydraulic fracturing.
Last year, North Carolina lawmakers voted to make fracking legal under the condition that there would be a two-year moratorium before deciding whether or not to grant any drilling permits to the oil and gas industry.
Now Senate bill 76 threatens to lift that moratorium, and allow for the injection of “flowback” water into deep wells for permanent disposal. SB 76 would also take away from North Carolina counties and towns their ability to collect taxes and fees from oil and gas companies for damage to infrastructure.
Senator Ellie Kinnaird weighed in on SB 76 last weekend when she appeared on News & Views with Chris Fitzsimon . Kinnaird notes the bill would also eliminate two seats from the N.C. Mining & Energy Commission – including the state geologist.

SB76 was passed by the Senate earlier this month and was referred to the House Committee on Commerce and Job Development.
