What’s happening in education this week

I’ve learned that when the General Assembly is in session, there’s a lot to keep track of – especially this time around. Here’s a roundup of what to expect this week in Raleigh if you’re following education news.
State Board of Education Monthly Meeting
The State Board of Ed meets Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning in the 7th Floor Board Room, Education Building, 301 N. Wilmington Street, Raleigh. Click here for Wednesday’s agenda and here for Thursday’s. Some highlights include:
On Tuesday morning, the House Education Committee will take up HB 839, Public School Reporting Reform , which is intended to reduce reporting requirements for LEAs.
Also on Tuesday morning, the Health and Human Services Committee will take up HB 935, NC Pre-K Law Changes , which would drop the household income eligibility for pre-K to 100 percent of the federal poverty level, which is $19,530 for a family of three. Currently the income ceiling is at 200 percent of the poverty level.
According to the National Institute for Early Education Research’s report released today , NC had one of the best pre-K programs in the country in 2011-12 – but it also experienced one of the largest drops in enrollment when the legislature cut the budget and changed eligibility requirements in 2011. The General Assembly capped participation by low-income children at 20 percent and required some families to pay part of the cost. Now the state is considering more cuts.
Tonight the Senate will vote on SB 516, Public School Regulatory Reform . Previously this bill was on track to eliminate laws requiring maximum class sizes and personal education plans (PEPs), but both of those provisions have been axed. Now the bill only reduces and/or eliminates various reporting requirements, including the requirement for LEAs to report substantive data about PEPs’ effectiveness.
