NC Community Health Centers will play bigger role in NC health exchange

Today the federal Department of Health and Human Services announced $150 million in grants to community health centers around the nation aimed at making the centers a major player in enrolling people under the Affordable Care Act.
This is a big deal in NC. Our excellent Community Health Centers run 150 different clinics around the state and serve hundreds of thousands of patients. Although Gov. McCrory and the NC General Assembly’s rejection of money under the ACA to expand affordable health coverage means more uninsured coming to the centers, the opening of the federal health exchange (likely in October) and large tax credits for purchasing coverage are an opportunity for many to get coverage.
Funding the health centers to tell people about new health coverage tax credits and the health exchange makes perfect sense. They are respected in their communities, deliver care to large numbers of lower income people and are dedicated to the mission of better care for everyone. This is really great news and a huge boost for implementing the Affordable Care Act in NC.
