What will Ann McCrory tell her hubbie about the NC House over dinner tonight?

Ann McCrory [1]Probably something like: “Don’t you ever send me over there again!” Or maybe, “There are some seriously troubled souls in that place!”

As you’re probably already aware, the North Carolina House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved a bill this afternoon championed by the Governor’s wife, Ann McCrory, to enact some modest new regulations of so-called “puppy mills.” It was a bipartisan bill [2] that passed  101-14.

Notwithstanding the First Lady’s support and presence in the chamber, however, at least a couple of members felt compelled to reveal their darker sides when it comes to the treatment of animals.  This is from a story on WRAL.com [3]:

“I AM a PETA person – I’m a person that likes to eat tasty animals,” responded Rep. George Cleveland, R-Onslow. “We are opening the door so in the next session, we’ll have another puppy mill bill and it’ll build on this one. I don’t think this is a good idea.”

Rep. Michael Speciale, R-Craven, said the care requirements are too ambiguous.

“‘Daily exercise’ – If I kick the dog across the room every day, is that considered daily exercise?” said Speciale. “’Euthanasia performed humanely’– Should I choose the axe or the baseball bat?”

Cle [4]veland [4] and Speciale [5], you will recall, are both hard right fire-breathers who have been known to make offensive/controversial statements on more than one occasion. Speciale has called the Rev. William Barber of the state NAACP a “racist” [6] and stated that public unemployment insurance should be abolished [7]. Cleveland infamously denied the existence of extreme poverty in North Carolina [8] and called for the profiling of immigrants in “straw hats” and “shaggy boots.” [9]

Let’s hope today’s developments serve as an eye-opening experience for the McCrory family as to the kinds of far right zealotry they’ve decided to accommodate and make nice with in the current General Assembly.
