News continues to trickle out of the back rooms where House and Senate leaders are discussing big tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy. Left out of the plans the House and Senate are pushing is the continuation of the state Earned Income Tax Credit that helps 900,000 low-wage workers in North Carolina.
A new report from the N.C. Budget & Tax Center shows why allowing the state EITC to expire would be a huge mistake and hurt thousands of families.
Former President Ronald Reagan called the EITC the “best anti-poverty, the best pro-family, and the best job creation measure” that policymakers have come up with.
You would think members of the current legislative leadership, most of whom claim Reagin as their political hero, would be more supportive of a program he so enthusiastically endorsed and expanded. Not to mention that it is the right thing to do for almost a million low-wage workers and their families in the state.
