Documents confirm IRS targeted liberal groups as well as conservatives

Not that anyone expects it to tamp down the out-of-control paranoia on the right wing, but new documents released by the I.R.S. offer strong confirmation that the supposed conspiracy to target conservative nonprofits was, in fact, nonexistent. As the New York Times reports this morning:

“The instructions that Internal Revenue Service officials used to look for applicants seeking tax-exempt status with “Tea Party” and “Patriots” in their titles also included groups whose names included the words “Progressive” and “Occupy,” according to I.R.S. documents released Monday.

The documents appeared to back up contentions by I.R.S. officials and some Democrats that the agency did not intend to single out conservative groups for special scrutiny. Instead, the documents say, officials were trying to use “key word” shortcuts to find overtly political organizations — both liberal and conservative — that were after tax favors by saying they were social welfare organizations.”

    Rob,
While it is true that there were instructions on various groups presenting applications to the IRS. The IRS was actually directed to send the non-“progressive” applications to a different department in DC for additional harassment by lawyers up there the ominous “group 7822” in this article. The “progressive” type groups could still be rubber stamped at the local level with no additional harassment or delays needed.

When you look at some of the tea party groups they should have been denied -remember all the rubber stamped pope groups….plus the republicans have to deflect attention from the wretched job they are doing by screaming Benghazi or IRS instead of doing the jobs most of them were elected to do by a minority of the voters…citizens united will be the end of govt. by the people and for the people and all the sacrifices we have made for a just society will be for naught…..sad to see us go the way of a banana republic
