McKissick: Legislation puts a ‘padlock’ on women’s health options (video)

A sweeping anti-abortion bill that was introduced without notice and late in the day Tuesday will be back on the NC Senate floor Wednesday.
House Bill 695 , which seeks to ban use of Sharia laws in North Carolina, was amended to prohibit health plans offered on the federal health care exchange from offering abortion coverage. The measure also mandates that abortion clinics have “transfer agreements” with local hospitals, and doctors remain in the room for the entire abortion procedure, (regardless of whether the procedure is surgical, medical, or chemical). All health care providers could opt out of providing abortion care under another provision of the new bill.
Senator Floyd McKissick criticized Republicans for pushing the restrictions without notice to the public or press, two days before the July 4th holiday.
“This legislation essentially has the effect of putting a padlock on the door of health facilities in this state that offer health care to women,” said Senator Floyd McKissick. “I hate to see the state of North Carolina, that I am so very proud of, turning its back on women’s rights.”
More than 1,000 women have indicated they will travel to Raleigh Wednesday to protest the Senate’s actions as the bill comes up for third reading.
