Gov McCrory’s favorite abortion bill – the low profile private health insurance ban

mcblog2 [1]Lots of the discussion around the abortion bill (S353 [2]) Gov. McCrory says he will break his campaign pledge [3]and sign has focused on the extensive new regulations aimed at health clinics providing abortion services that are aimed at putting the clinics out of business.  There is another part of the bill however that will affect all women in NC who decide to buy private health insurance plans through NC’s new health exchange established as part of national health reform.

With this bill McCrory and NC legislators will prevent women, who are buying health plans in the health exchange with their own money, from choosing to buy health plans that cover abortion services.  Only plans that cover abortion in very narrow circumstances related to some health conditions would be allowed – yet one more instance of NC legislators wanting to make decisions about what health services women need and what health services the honorables, in their infinite wisdom and “deliberations” in Raleigh, decide women don’t need.

For free-market legislators, shouldn’t women be able to buy whatever plan they like in the health exchange with their own money?  Sure some women might get a tax credit to help purchase coverage, but I thought that was the whole point of a tax credit – the taxpayer gets to spend his or her own money as they see fit.  I guess personal responsibility and choice go out the window for GOPers on this issue once again.
