Bar Association calls for a veto of the “star chamber” bill

According to theĀ News & Observer [1], the North Carolina Bar Association today joined the chorus of voices asking Gov. Pat McCrory to veto H652 [2], which changes the rules for the discipline of judges.

As we reported last week [3], the bill would wrest control over most public proceedings involving judicial misconduct from the Judicial Standards Commission and pass it on to the Supreme Court, which would consider allegations in secret and disclose information to the public if and when the justices decided to discipline a particular judge. It also would allow the state Supreme Court justices to decide if and when to discipline each other — again, in secret.

Newspapers across the state [4] have since criticized the bill and asked for the governor’s veto, with the most recent call coming from the Whiteville News Reporter [5].
