In case you missed them, two items over on the main NCPW site deserve your attention today.
Item # 2 is Education Reporter Lindsay Wagner’s new story “Common Core comes uner fire in North Carolina.” Here’s the intro:
“In recent months, there has been a growing movement across the United States to put the brakes on the implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS, or ‘Common Core’), a set of guidelines about what students should know and be able to do in grades K-12 that have been adopted by 45 states and the District of Columbia since 2009.
Those on the right fear that the Common Core inappropriately imposes national education standards on states, does not come with a clear implementation process, and poses grave threats to student privacy.
Those on the left, such as notable historian and public education advocate Diane Ravitch, oppose Common Core for its corporate backing and believes that the guidelines essentially set up students to fail, providing another reason for parents to abandon public schools for private alternatives.”
