Salt in the wound: No job, no food stamps

As David Firestone reports today in this New York Times blog [1], House Republicans under the leadership of Rep. Eric Cantor are now proposing to cut the food stamp program by $4 billion by cutting off aid to people without jobs and children:

. . .  Cantor wants to cut $4 billion a year, double the earlier cut, by removing up to 4 million people from the food stamp program. His method of kicking all those people off is particularly diabolical, considering the Republican refusal to stimulate the economy: he wants to punish those unable to find a job. Anyone who is unemployed and not raising children will be limited to three months of food stamps every three years.

The proposal, if passed, will strike a particularly devastating blow in North Carolina, with one of the highest unemployment rates in the country and with thousands losing, or about to lose, unemployment benefits under a state law [2] passed by the Republican majority in the General Assembly and signed by Governor Pat McCrory in February.
