Human service agencies held a press briefing in Raleigh today to call attention to the ongoing (and growing) pain afflicting people in need as the results of the absurd acroos-the-board “sequestration” cuts enacted by Congress eralier this year. WRAL.com has the story here .
This is from a press release distributed at the event:
As both houses of Congress continue to debate the next steps in the federal budget, non-profit groups from around the Triangle hosted a press conference Tuesday to address the extreme damage already done to working families in North Carolina due to automatic, across-the-board sequestration and to call for replacing sequestration with a balanced approach that includes new revenues.
Six months into the sequestration spending cuts, it’s clear that without new revenue, North Carolinians will continue to be hit hard by spending cuts to core initiatives like education, job training and healthcare. Service providers and analysts explained how cuts have limited the ability of services such as food banks, meals on wheels, and HeadStart to make sure families have their basic needs met.
“All of us have already weathered cuts and the gutting of social safety net programs like providing meals for seniors, and investments that help support middle and low income working families like early childhood education,” said Alan Winstead, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels of Wake County. “Now it’s time to ensure that we don’t exacerbate poverty and inequality, but instead get back on the right track of investing in our children, families and seniors.”
