The NC Department of Public Instruction recognized schools and school districts with high graduation rates today in Durham.
Ten school districts and 46 high schools were honored for having the highest four-year cohort graduation rates among all districts and schools in 2012-13.
Elkin City Schools was first in the list of top ten school districts, with a graduation rate of 94.1 percent. Mooresville Graded School District was second with a graduation rate of 93.4 percent and Pamlico County Schools was third with a graduation rate of 92.9 percent.
“The number one contributor to our success,” Wanda Dawson, Superintendent of Pamlico County Schools, told NC Policy Watch, “is our personnel. Teachers, social workers, nurses — we all knock on doors and counsel children to prevent dropouts.”
“We also have a success coordinator position that has helped [prevent dropouts] tremendously,” said Dawson.
Elkins City Schools is a small district with just one school each at the elementary, middle and high school levels.
Commenting on the reductions in state level spending on education, Elkin High School Principal Joel Hoyle said, “it makes us do more with less,” said Hoyle. “We’re lucky we haven’t lost too much this year, but we have already been scaled back as far as you can go. Many people wear many different hats.”
Thirty-six schools in North Carolina had a graduation rate of 100 percent. Guilford County Schools topped that list with eight schools graduating all of their students.
In 2006, North Carolina’s overall graduation rate was 68.3 percent. During the past seven years, that number has risen to 82.5 percent.
