Breaking Bad lunch links: Shutdown, Sign-up, and sing-along

Well, if Congress cannot agree on a spending bill by the end of today, thousands of government workers could find themselves with much longer lunch breaks this week. All joking aside, it appear that a government shutdown is on the horizon .
How big a deal is it, and what government services would be affected?
USA Today offers this helpful article answering more that 60 questions about the shutdown . For those interested in making it a teachable moment, Time offers how to explain it to your kids .
One thing the looming shutdown will not impact is the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Open enrollment for those who are eligible begins on Tuesday.
The Washington Post has a great primer for navigating the health care law . Also be sure to check out Chris Fitzsimon’s radio interview with the director of the NC Health Access Coalition. Adam Searing explained in Sunday’s interview who stands to benefit from the health care reform law, and why some in Congress are still desperately fighting to defund it:
Chances are you’ve seen more than few ads over the last few weeks (including one featuring a creepy Uncle Sam ) designed to generate fear and apprehension over ‘Obamacare.’ Do yourself a favor, sort out the fact from the fiction at Politifact where they offer the top 16 myths about the new law .
Media Matters specifically takes Fox News to task for its misinformation about national health care reform. Here’s how MM’s Eric Boehlert sums up Fox’s coverage:
There’s nothing wrong with being passionate and dedicated to a cause. But the right wing’s almost hypnotic, monomaniacal focus on opposing health care reform has been matched, if not outstripped, by its relentless desire to purposely lie about the new law year after year after year. That’s not passion, that’s propaganda.
On the lighter side, National Geographic is celebrating 125 years of photographic exploration. Fast Company has a look at some of the publication’s most memorable shots over the years.
For foodies, NPR’s Allison Aubrey had an interesting segment this morning on extra-virgin olive oil and whether it’s all that beneficial for your health. Spoiler alert: more than half of the extra-virgin olive oil imported into the U.S. has been shown to be sub-standard .
Finally, we won’t spoil how the series finale of ‘Breaking Bad’ wrapped-up last night for those who may have DVRed the show. But for those Progressive Pulse readers already missing Walter White, the chemistry-teacher-turned-meth-kingpin, and his partner Jesse Pinkman, we’ll leave you with this musical parody set to the tune of Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”
And with that tune stuck in your head, it’s time to get back to work!
