Asheville C-T editorial debunks conservative spin on public schools

An editorial in the Asheville Citizen-Times provides new and damning evidence about the real world impact of the state’s FY 2014 budget for public schools.
As the editorial explains, local PTO’s and PTA’s have resorted to passing the hat in order to fund vital instructional positions in their public schools that Gov. McCrory and the General Assembly left unfunded.
“Parent-teacher groups are caught between increased demands and reduced resources. The demands will continue to increase as long as the state abdicates its responsibility to fund the public schools properly.
‘There are PTOs all over the country that are starting to fund staffing since the state governments are just not delivering what schools need,’ said Monica DeMatos, president of the Glen Arden Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization. ‘And that is a frustrating trend.’”
This, of course, is a preposterous situation. As the headline of the editorial rightfully notes, the state, not PTO’s or PTA’s should pay teachers. Public schools benefit all taxpayers and should be funded via tax dollars. To the extent we head down this road of forcing parents to fund public schools with voluntary contributions, North Carolina takes yet another step in the direction of privatizing what ought to be a core public structure.
