Lunch links, Tuesday edition

Okay, here’s a mid-day break from what’s turned out to be a blockbuster day of legislative hearings on the troubled N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. You can watch this afternoon’s hearing at 1 p.m., where Secretary Aldona Wos is expected to answer questions about why so many people have having trouble getting their federal emergency food stamps , and why doctor’s practices can’t get paid for Medicaid services. There’s also the $85,000 and $87.500 salaries she gave to former McCrory campaigners now in top positions at the state agency. And there’s the $37,000 severance given to a chief of staff that spent a month on the job, and the $95,000-a-year job offered to a Greenville woman who hadn’t been in the workforce for a decade and was, up until recently, known mostly for her involvement with conservative causes.
But, there’s more out there to digest during this lunch hour. (And, yes, that pun was intended).
First, here’s an interesting story from the New York Times over the weekend about how the plan to shut down the federal government over the Affordable Care Act was put into motions months ago.
If you’ve been looking to escape the news cycles of political news out of both Raleigh and Washington, you should check out this new PBS documentary show about Kinston chef Vivian Howard, “A Chef’s Life .”
Here’s a trailer for the show, you can watch the episodes that have aired here . (Just scroll down)
With the Avett Brothers providing the soundtrack and lots of discussions about grits, pig and tea (sweet, naturally), it’s about as North Carolina as you can get.
Oh, and speaking of the lure of rural North Carolina and food, the N.C. State Fair is less than 10 days away. You can get advance tickets here . What’s on your “must have” eats list at the Fair? For me, it’s N.C. State ice cream , a grilled ear of corn and a beef sandwich from the N.C. Cattlemen’s Association .
Even if it’s not a deep-fried Oreo, enjoy your lunch and this Tuesday edition of Lunch Links.
