Voter discontent weighs down approval ratings for NC’s governor, legislature (video)

Washington, D.C. hasn’t cornered the market on discontented voters. New October poll numbers [1] show Governor Pat McCrory with just a 37% approval rating, with 51% saying they disapprove. Fifty-four percent of those surveyed also disapprove of the job the General Assembly is doing.

Tom Jensen, director for Public Policy Polling [2], says that McCrory started the year with 45% of voters giving him good marks. But following a contentious legislative session, and more recently the continued questions about the Department of Health and Human Services, the governor’s numbers remain “mired in the 30s.”

Governor Bev Perdue, McCrory’s predecessor, saw her approval rating fall her first year in office and her numbers never seemed to recover.  Jensen says McCrory could suffer the same fate, if he doesn’t find a way to reconnect with some of the Democrats and Independents who helped him capture the office last November.

Jensen points out that if there was an election for the state legislature today, Democrats would win — but only by a slim margin (44%/41%).

Jensen joins us this week on News & Views with Chris Fitzsimon to discuss the latest poll numbers [1] for the governor, the legislature, and preview the 2014 U.S. Senate race [3]. For a preview click below:
