UPDATE: The Buncombe County GOP moves to rid itself of Yelton. See below
The Buncombe County conservative activist who told one of the “The Daily Show”‘s fake new reporters that North Carolina’s voter identification and election law changes were primarily designed to hurt Democrats (and not prevent voter fraud) said he’s happy with the comedy show’s segment.
“The comments that were made, that I said, I stand behind them,” Don Yelton told the Mountain Xpress today, an alternative weekly newspaper in Asheville.
He also told the weekly that it could have been worse – other things he said in the course of the interview were apparently more shocking.
For those who haven’t seen the Daily Show segment, which aired Wednesday night, Yelton was interviewed by the Daily Show’s Aasif Mandvi about North Carolina’s voter ID/suppression law when Yelton let loose a string of thoughts on race and politics.
“The law is going to kick the Democrats in the butt,” Yelton said. “If it hurts a bunch of college kids that are too lazy to get up off their bohonkas and go get a photo ID, then so be it. If it hurts a bunch of whites, so be it. If it hurts a bunch of lazy blacks that want the government to give them everything, then so be it,”
The Mountain XPress story also points out that Yelton is not a member of the state GOP executive team, but is a Buncombe County Republican precinct chair.
Update: The Buncombe County GOP, via their Facebook page , disavowed Yelton’s comments and said Thursday that they were asking Yelton to resign from his position as a precinct chair. WRAL reported here that Yelton stepped down this afternoon.
“On behalf of the Buncombe County Republican Party we would like to express our sincerest regrets and disappointment in the comments made by Don Yelton on the Wednesday edition of Jon Stewarts “The Daily Show”,” the press release read. “Mr. Yelton’s comments are offensive, uniformed [sic], and unacceptable of any member within the Republican Party. In no way are his comments representative of the local or state Republican Party.”
