Your Thursday edition of Lunch Links starts with a few interesting news items. Governor Pat McCrory told MSNBC Wednesday that the voter suppression law he signed earlier this year was “much ado about nothing,” which will come as a surprise to all the people who will find it more difficult to vote in the next two elections.
And former Governor Jim Hunt told a crowd at a fundraiser in Greensboro this week that he believes the speculation that McCrory and the General Assembly will find the money to give a teachers a small raise next year ahead of the November elections by making deeper cuts to the already strapped university system. Lovely.
Two places to check in this week to read more about the systematic dismantling of our public education system are the Soapox right here at NC Policy Watch , where you can hear firsthand from teachers about what they face in the classroom every day, and WUNC-FM that continues with its series “Where We Are Now: Teaching in North Carolina.”
One education story that is suprisingly missing from many of the major mainstream outlets is the decision by Myrtle Grove Christian School in Wilmington to bar gay students and students with gay parents from attending. The school is eligible to receive taxpayer funding next fall as part of the school voucher scheme passed by the General Assembly this year.
The Star-News is on the story but other media outlets have not given it much attention, even though many of the other 600+ schools eligible for public funding from vouchers appear to have similar policies.
One bright spot on the basic human rights front comes from Illinois, which this week became the 16th state to establish marriage equality. Too bad we keep having to look to other states for good news these days.
But there’s always music to help brighten things up. Today is the birthday of Dr. John who turns 73. Here is the funky Doctor just last summer performing his classic “Right Place, Wrong Time.” Happy week before Thanksgiving.
