One year after the Newtown tragedy

Saturday marks the one-year anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. The December 14th shooting left 20 children and six women dead, renewing the national debate on gun safety.
Mother Jones reports today that in the past year at least 194 kids ages 12 and under were killed by guns in 43 states.
The New York Times reports that while Congress failed to pass major gun control legislation this year, more than 1,500 gun bills were debated in the states with 109 of them passing.
In North Carolina, the most significant piece of gun legislation to become law in 2013 was H937 . The omnibus measure expanded areas in which concealed carry holders can bring a gun to include parks and other recreational venues, and allows licensed permit holders to keep guns locked in their cars on public school property. The law also strengthens the penalty for those who use firearms in the commission of a felony, and requires the submission of mental health records to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).
Stateline notes that 37 states have responded to the Newtown tragedy by increasing their mental health spending. For more on changes to state mental health legislation in 2013, read this report by the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
