Happy Thursday! Hope you’ve gotten most of your holiday shopping done—and if you haven’t, may the force be with you as you step inside of a mall this weekend.
In case you missed it, lawmakers held a hearing this week on Common Core, and the N&O has a good recap here .
There to explain the Common Core standards to lawmakers and education professionals? A recent college graduate from the University of Delaware, Michael Brickman. He worked for Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s election campaign and served as his education advisor. Brickman now works for the Fordham Institute . (If you haven’t heard, Wisconsin is doing its best to dismantle its own public education system .)
Did you know that once again, North Carolina leads the nation in the number of National Board Certified Teachers ? Twenty-one percent of the state’s instructional workforce is board certified, which is the highest credential in the teaching profession. For now, teachers who have board certification receive a salary supplement, unless lawmakers take it away, as they have already done with master’s degree salary supplements .
Speaking of teachers, this week WUNC is running a great series on teacher preparation as a part of its North Carolina Teacher Project . Check out Dave DeWitt’s story on Teach for America . Warren County Principal Ryan Hurley’s quote was particularly telling:
Those, I think, who still continue to lash out at TFA need to take a strong look at where the education graduates from NC State and UNC Chapel Hill are going to teach because by and large they are not beating down our doors to come and teach.
It doesn’t pay to be a teacher in North Carolina, and it certainly doesn’t pay in the poorer rural districts. Local school districts will seek out labor they can find – adequately trained or not.
Finally, I promise not to send you a Christmas text. Ever.
