Charlotte Observer: Fix NC’s food stamp problems, find new leader for DHHS

If you’ve read Rob Schofield’s Reality Check column [1] this morning or Sarah Ovaska’s Thursday blog post [2], you know that the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services is scrambling to clear a backlog of food stamp cases to comply with a February 10th deadline set by the USDA.

Now in a pointed editorial in Friday’s Charlotte Observer [3] associate editor Fannie Flono writes that it’s time for the McCrory administration to fix the food stamp crisis and then replace the DHHS Secretary:

McCroryWos [4]

Gov. Pat McCrory and DHHS Sec. Aldona Wos.

“DHHS had a troubled past before Aldona Wos. But under her leadership so far, things are worse not better. It is unacceptable when the state shorts medical providers on money for their services, and it’s unacceptable when families depending on food stamps can’t get them.

McCrory and Wos need to fix these problems with haste. Then McCrory needs to look elsewhere for someone to lead DHHS. And this time, consider that anyone who accepts only a $1 for their services might not be up to the job.”

You can read the Observer’s full editorial here [5].

Earlier this month, Gov. McCrory repeated his confidence in Secretary Aldona Wos, suggesting that the size of her department might be to blame for the recent problems at DHHS.
