North Carolina’s recent wintry weather has helped give rise to a lot of pent up activity this week. Tonight at 7:00 pm for instance, is an excellent event at the Duke University Center for Documentary Studies entitled “Organizing the South: How a Southern Workers’ Movement Can Change the Nation.” Click here for more information and here to watch the video livestream tonight.
And speaking of not-to-be-missed events, be sure if you get the chance to check out the Raleigh showing of “Inequality for All,” Robert Reich’s powerful new movie about America’s modern economy. The event will be held on Tuesday, February 18 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at William Peace University’s Browne-McPherson Music Building. Parking is free on campus. Click here for more information.
And speaking of the exploding inequality of the modern economy, check out economist Dean Baker’s essay from over the weekend in which he explains how America’s inequality hasn’t occurred by accident or simply as the result of the talent and hard work of the top 1%. To the contrary, as Baker explains, it’s happened “by design.”
And speaking of things that are exploding, the Duke Coal Ash disaster continues to be the biggest story in the North Carolina policy world. At this hour state lawmakers are receiving the official explanations of public officials and Duke spokespeople. Click here for the WRAL video.
And speaking of Duke, in case you missed it, click here to see last Friday’s statement by Democracy North Carolina calling for disclosures and investigations with respect to Duke energy’s political contributions to their former employee, Gov. Pat McCrory.
And speaking of the Governor, Marquita Brown of the Greensboro News & Record had an interesting story yesterday about the Guv’s teacher salary proposal and the debate surrounding it. Here’s one especially interesting passage:
“By 2015-16, teachers with a bachelor’s degree and up to nine years of experience should all earn about $35,000 a year. A 10-year veteran teacher would earn just $800 more. That’s a possible scenario if state legislators boost base salaries for some teachers but not all.”
What could possibly go wrong with that ?
Finally, speaking of politicians like the Guv who love to espouse a far right, anti-government ideology and then get all mushy about public services when the politics demand it, the folks at Think Progress have compiled a list of the top 13 conservative politicians who attacked President Obama’s economy-saving stimulus (which celebrates its fifth anniversary today) but then cut to the front of the line to get federal cash for their own constituents. Hint/spoiler alert: Hypocrite #1 is the fellow pictured below.
