Legislators have spent months now discussing how to adequately compensate public school teachers, who have only seen a 1.2 percent raise over the past five years. But now stagnant wages are increasingly becoming an issue on North Carolina’s 58 community college campuses.
System President Scott Ralls notes that North Carolina’s community college faculty members rank 41st in the nation in overall pay. And according to Ralls, North Carolina’s pay is about 10 percent lower than community college instructors in other Southern states.
Dr. Ralls appeared on News & Views with Chris Fitzsimon over the weekend to discuss this thorny issue. He also weighs in on his hopes that the General Assembly will allow the colleges to keep $16.8 million that they have saved through streamlining remedial programs. Reinvesting those funds would give local colleges more flexibility as they work to retain instructors who are being lured away into the private sector.
