Fayetteville Observer: Proposal to abandon Common Core is a step backwards

Common core [1]Yet another prominent voice has weighed in against the move advanced by some conservatives in the General Assembly to abandon North Carolina’s adoption of the Common Core education standards for math and English (an issue we explored in some depth yesterday [2]). This is from this morning’s Fayetteville Observer [3]:

“Those with fringe views invariably claim they represent many similar-minded folks, but such support can be measured more in volume than numbers.

Unfortunately, some of those with an extreme education agenda have won seats in our General Assembly and are pushing to erode the Common Core curriculum standards that educators worked so hard to put in place….

Some criticisms are fair, but Common Core already has a built-in five-year cycle for making appropriate adjustments.

Those who want to ditch Common Core don’t get it. ‘We have to have some standards,’ said Rep. Bryan Holloway, R-Stokes. ‘We’ve determined we need something other than Common Core.’ He’s mistaken.

The standard, Common Core, is what states have agreed upon. Anything else isn’t a standard, but a concoction, placing education policy firmly in the hands of the fringe.”
