If you’ve been following our coverage of the power struggles on the UNC Board of Governors and the continued controversy over the “Silent Sam” statue at UNC’s Chapel Hill campus , there are some meetings coming up for which you should mark your calendar.
- The Task Force on UNC Board of Governors Meetings will meet Wednesday, October 4 at 10 a.m. in the Executive Conference Room of the Spangler Center at 910 Raleigh Road, Chapel Hill, NC.
- The Task Force on the Purpose of UNC General Administration will meet Monday, October 9 at at 10 a.m. in Room 128 at the Center for School Leadership Development at 140 Friday Center Drive, Chapel Hill, NC.
Neither task force yet has an agenda or materials for the meetings publicly available. The meetings come after clashes between the Board of Governors and UNC System President Margaret Spellings and UNC Chancellor Carol Folt. The most recent front in those ongoing struggles has been the question of what UNC – as a campus and system – will do about “Silent Sam.”
Folt has said she would remove the Confederate statue – the only such monument on a UNC campus – for safety reasons, if she had the authority. She maintains that a request to the N.C. Historical Commission – which must approve such a removal under a 2015 law – would have to come from the UNC system and not the chancellor.
“I do believe that as long as Silent Sam stands in its current location, it runs the risk of continuing to drain energy and good will that we’ve worked so hard to maintain on our campus and truly does distract us from reaching the important goals that we all share,” Folt told the UNC Board of Trustees last week.
The UNC Board of Trustees will have an opportunity for public comment at its next meeting. Details and an agenda haven’t yet been solidified, but the period will come during one of the board’s two-day meetings November 15 and 16 at the Carolina Inn, 211 Pittsboro Street, in Chapel Hill. The full board meets at 8 a.m. both days with committee meetings between 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
