Filing: GOP secretaries of state support NC lawmakers’ request to block special master’s plans

The secretaries of state for Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, South Carolina and West Virginia support North Carolina lawmakers in asking the U.S. Supreme Court to block a special master’s plan from being used in this year’s elections.

They filed a request [1] with the highest court Wednesday to show their support.

“In support of their motion, Amici Secretaries of State assert that the January 21, 2018 district court ruling at issue raises grave concerns about disruption of the May 2018 [primary] elections in North Carolina and the specter of precedent for similar disruptions in other States if other courts follow suit,” the document states.

The special master’s plan redraws some of lawmakers’ remedial legislative districts after the federal three-judge panel had concerns about state and federal constitutional violations. GOP lawmakers think their redrawn districts should stand and have asked the Supreme Court to agree.

Candidate filing for primary elections begins Feb. 12 and runs through the end of the month. Until the Supreme Court makes its decision on the request for stay and appeal, legislative districts are up in the air.

Chief Justice John Roberts requested all responses in the case by noon today.
