Gerrymandering plaintiffs: Supreme Court should not block special master’s plan

The U.S. Supreme Court should reject North Carolina lawmakers’ request to block a special master’s districts from being used in this year’s elections, according to a response filed Friday.

The response in North Carolina v. Covington, an ongoing racial gerrymandering case, was due by noon today. The Supreme Court will now make a decision about whether or not to block the legislative districts drawn by a special master and revert to a remedial map drawn by the legislature.

The plaintiffs allege in their response that lawmakers have returned to the Supreme Court “so that they can hang on to the fruits of their racial-gerrymandering labor for at least one more election cycle.”

“There is no justification for an emergency stay in this case,” the document states.
