Don’t forget tomorrow’s “Pots and Spoons” Protest

If you’re anywhere near Raleigh tomorrow, please consider taking just a few minutes out of your day to participate in a brief but important protest being organized by and on behalf of people excluded from the state lawmaking process during the last 16 months.

A coalition of progressive groups is calling on protesters to gather across from the Legislative Building at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday for a “Pots and Spoons protest” modeled on the “cacerolazo” protests that frequently occur in Spanish-speaking countries. It should be a lot of fun.

Also, in an ironic and not surprising development for a group that wouldn’t recognize irony if it was standing right in front of them, the troubled souls at Americans for the Prosperous have announced that they will be on hand to tout their big dollar, Art Pope financed ad campaign in defense of the conservative General Assembly and to distribute earplugs. What better symbol for the the closed-minded people running the General Assembly?

For several days now, Americans for Prosperity NC and the Pope-Civitas Institute have been promoting “a major new effort” entitled the “Real Solutions Road Tour” in which their advocates would ”criss-cross North Carolina” to promote their defense of the conservative General Assembly and its extreme policy decisions.

To read the various tweets and website posts, you’d have thought there was going to be a long series of well-attended campaign-style rallies with tea partying conservatives coming out of the woodwork at stops throughout the state.

Here’s essentially what actually happened on Day One of the tour today: Nothing. Zilch. Bupkis. Read More…

From a fact sheet distributed to the news media today in anticipation of the AFP/Pope-Civitas/tea party’s so-called “Real Solutions” tour (let us know if you’d like printable copies):

“Real Solutions” tour equals Real Distortions

Five facts you need to know about the tea party’s latest propaganda tour

Worried that public opinion has turned against the out-of-control policy priorities of the extreme, tea partying North Carolina General Assembly, right-wing political groups in Raleigh are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on high-priced TV ads and a bizarre “billboard tour” in which they’re trying to claim that conservative state legislative leaders did not cut education funding this year.

Here are the facts about this claim: Read More…

Tea party groups still refuse to disclose who’s bankrolling Real Distortions campaign

More amazing hypocrisy from the local right-wing tea partiers this morning. According to Raleigh’s News & Observer, Americans for the Prosperous and the Pope-Civitasers still refuse to disclose who is paying the hundreds of thousands of dollars they’re spending on their so-called “Real Solutions” TV ad/traveling billboard campaign. Mind you, these are the same people who maintain a website they call “Carolina Transparency”!!

In this case, the only thing transparent, of course, is the blatant hypocrisy displayed by groups who are too chicken to tell the world which rich guys/corporations are bankrolling their efforts to hoodwink the people of North Carolina.

New poll: Strong voter support for public schools and teachers; strong opposition to the legislature’s funding cuts

The latest NC Policy Watch Carolina Issues Poll is out and, once again, the notion being spread by the Pope-Civitas/Real Distortions crowd that North Carolinians have given up on public education is shown to be, in a word, ”baloney.”

As today’s poll shows, people like their schools a lot; they’re just worried about them and think we need to invest more to make them work better.

No wonder the distorters are launching their strange and silly billboard tour tomorrow to go along with their gazillion dollar TV ad campaign (and still refusing to say who is paying for the whole mess); they know the public is lining up against them and Tea Party Thom Tillis and are madly searching for a way out of the political hole they’ve dug.
