Surprise! Woman in AFP/Pope Civitas ads is tea partier

As Progress NC has previously reported, the TV ads sponsored by the extreme conservative groups Americans for Prosperity and the Civitas Institute are full of lies and distortions about state budget cuts to education. The Charlotte Observer called the NC Real Solutions ads “egregious” as they deny the plainly obvious cuts to education in the state budget.

Budget experts debunk AFP/Civitas distortions

In a document entitled “Real solutions require real facts,” the experts at the N.C. Budget and Tax Center shined more light today on the numerous distortions found in the new half-million dollar ad campaign financed by the Pope-Civtas Institute and Americans for Prosperity.

The right wing cheap shots Perdue

As any regular and honest reader of NC Policy Watch can attest, our websites are no hotbeds of liberal love for Governor Perdue. Through the years, it’s fair to say that she’s goten mixed reviews in our various publications. Though we’ve praised her performance many times, we’ve also given her heck on multiple occasions.

Today’s attacks on the Governor by Art Pope camp, however, for her very understated criticisms of its blatantly dishonest ads about public education deserve a response. Put simply: the Pope people are taking cheap shots at the Guv. Here’s why:

According to the Pope people, Perdue has no right to criticize them because she signed a budget in 2009 that cut education funding. How dare she criticize them now, say the Pope-sters, for doing what she did herself?

The cash behind the Real Distortions

Mostly lost in the smattering of news stories that the Pope people scratched out yesterday with their new and absurdly misleading TV ad defending the reactionary General Assembly was a fairly remarkable fact: These folks plan to drop a cool half-million bucks on TV ad buys.

You got that? Two ”nonpartisan” nonprofits are just casually going to fork out $500,000  over the next few weeks to put TV ads all over North Carolina. It appears they’re even going so far as to buy ads in Norfolk so as to try and cover the northeast corner of the state as well.

How is this possible? How could a pair of groups with modest-sized staffs just happen to have a half-million simoleons lying around?

The answer, almost assuredly is this: The money wasn’t just lying around; it was sitting in a Pope and/or Koch bank account (at least originally) and is now simply being funneled through Civitas and AFP so as to make the whole exercise less egregiously offensive.   

 

Pope groups’ new effort shows Real Desperation

Today’s Fitzsimon File aptly names the latest attempt by the Pope Civitas and Americans for the Prosperous people to put a happy face on the state’s rightfully unpopular legislature as “Real Distortions.com,” but it’s clear that a lot of other names would also fit.

Real Delusions, Real Misrepresentations, Real Fact-Twisting, Real Prevarications, Real Falsifications, Real Whitewash, Real Whoppers and Real Shameless would all fit the bill as well.
