If only the local “libertarian-free market” think tanks had the courage to embrace the entire libertarian agenda rather than simply using the label as a convenient cover for what almost always ends up being a defense of far right conservatism.

For instance, national Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson was in Durham yesterday and had this to say according to the Durham Herald-Sun:

“I am the only candidate who does not want to bomb Iran,” he said. “I am the only candidate who would get out of Afghanistan tomorrow. I am the only candidate who believes that marriage equality is a guaranteed Constitutional right. I am the only candidate who wants to end our drug wars now and legalize marijuana now.”

For some reason, however, neither the Lockers or the Civitasers or Americans for the Prosperous has yet to offer up any glowing reports on this comment or the general Libertarian support of keeping government at bay when it comes to private, personal behavior (much less some sort of effort to favorably contrast President Obama and Governor Romney on these issues).

Meanwhile the partisan propaganda from the these folks just keeps on coming and coming and coming and coming and coming.

On one level, you gotta’ hand it to the Pope-Civitas people; they’ve gotten a huge amount of mileage out of their political “horse race” polls through the years (name recognition, the air of legitimacy, the chance to drive readers to their almost always absurd propaganda).

But seriously, if ever there was an example of why this stuff is regularly unreliable garbage that the mainstream news media need to, once and for all, STOP reporting on, this is it: Today, the Pope Civitas people reported that their latest “poll” shows that 30% of African American North Carolinians support Mitt Romney for president.

Obviously, this is absurd. A third grader would understand this. As one commenter on the Civitas blog noted: Read More

The folks over on Right Wing Avenue are sponsoring a “watchdog training” here in Raleigh later this month at which the headliner is the very troubled troublemaker James O’Keefe.

As  you will recall, one of the many “accomplishments” on young Mr. O’Keefe’s brief “watchdog” career (other than manufacturing inaccurate and dishonest “gotcha'” videos and getting arrested for attempting to play dirty tricks on a Louisiana Senator) was producing a video that wrongfully — some would say fraudulently — claimed to have unearthed voter fraud in North Carolina a couple months back.

As the folks at Think Progress have documented, the whole thing was as phony as a three dollar bill.

All in all, quite a coup for the local Pope group!

For several days now, Americans for Prosperity NC and the Pope-Civitas Institute have been promoting “a major new effort” entitled the “Real Solutions Road Tour” in which their advocates would “criss-cross North Carolina” to promote their defense of the conservative General Assembly and its extreme policy decisions.

To read the various tweets and website posts, you’d have thought there was going to be a long series of well-attended campaign-style rallies with tea partying conservatives coming out of the woodwork at stops throughout the state.

Here’s essentially what actually happened on Day One of the tour today: Nothing. Zilch. Bupkis. Read More

From a fact sheet distributed to the news media today in anticipation of the AFP/Pope-Civitas/tea party’s so-called “Real Solutions” tour (let us know if you’d like printable copies):

“Real Solutions” tour equals Real Distortions

Five facts you need to know about the tea party’s latest propaganda tour

Worried that public opinion has turned against the out-of-control policy priorities of the extreme, tea partying North Carolina General Assembly, right-wing political groups in Raleigh are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on high-priced TV ads and a bizarre “billboard tour” in which they’re trying to claim that conservative state legislative leaders did not cut education funding this year.

Here are the facts about this claim: Read More
